Vickie’s Grizzly Bug: An Effective Year-Round Mini Leech Pattern
The Grizzly Bug is scaled down cousin of my Predator Bugger. The Grizzly Bug has a smaller profile and silhouette. It is a perfect choice when sight casting, fishing in shallow water, or along shallow shoreline areas.
This unweighted pattern imitates a host of aquatic food sources including leeches, damsels, caddis, mayflies, and dragonfly nymphs. It is an excellent fly to locate feeding trout. I’ve incorporated UV materials to add visibility and increase the fly’s productivity.
Water Temperature: The Key to Predicting Feeding Behavior
Water temperature is a critical factor in dictating feeding behavior. Understanding how water temperature affects trout feeding behavior provides valuable insight into your presentation strategy. Since water temperatures vary by season and the time of day, give yourself an advantage by including a water thermometer in your tackle bag.
Winter Fishing
If you are tempted to put away your rods for the season, you may miss out on some great winter fishing. There are windows of opportunity during winter when fish can be caught. However, you will need to adjust your presentation, line, and pattern selections.
Fall Fishing Report: Wildhorse Reservoir, Nevada
Wildhorse Reservoir in Nevada provided a nice cap to my fall travels before lakes freeze over this winter. After a day of stellar fishing, a rapidly moving cold front moved in overnight causing a significant drop in water temperature. This sudden and dramatic change had grave consequences for the yellow perch and moved the trout into deeper water. While the evening campfire warmed my toes, conversation centered on how these sudden changes in conditions would affect the next two days of fishing.
