Vickie’s UV Emerger

My UV Emerger has an impressive record attracting hungry trout.  Its signature burnt orange buggy thorax grabs the attention of trout on the hunt for mayfly, caddis, damsels, or midge emergers. The soft hackle catches the eye of feeding trout by adding movement to the fly when retrieved.

Callibaetis Mayfly

The UV Emerger’s visibility is further enhanced by integrating UV materials in the tail, abdomen, and thorax. The result is an emerger pattern irresistible to feisty, hungry trout.

How to Fish: When trout are feeding on or just below the surface, use a line that maintains the fly close to the surface. I prefer using an intermediate 7-foot sink tip, however a floating or hover line is also effective.

Trout eating on the surface

When there are no visible signs of feeding trout, fish it as an ascending pupa up through the water column using a slow intermediate sinking line. Use slow, 4-6 inch retrieves with long, 3-5 second pauses. Be ready to set the hook because the take will be soft usually occurring on the pause as the fly is sinking.

Be prepared with a variety of colors depending upon the hatch. During a callibaetis hatch use gray, during a damsel or caddis hatch, use either olive and or caddis brown. In low light conditions or algae stained water use black or caddis brown for maximum visibility.

Use white UV Emerger during a mayfly spinner fall

Use a #10 hook in the spring. When the water warms from July through the fall months, drop to a smaller #12 hook size.
